gospel of Thomas 32

Jesus said, "A city being built on a high mountain and fortified cannot fall, nor can it be hidden."

In this saying, from the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus is clearly using a parable, an analogy. And what springs to my mind is, once more, the natural way of being. A city being built on a high mountain and fortified cannot fall. The essence within each one of us is incorruptible. It cannot be destroyed. This is what I feel Jesus is referring to by the city, a city built on a high mountain.

Our essence is deep within us. And yet it is also the most lofty of places – exalted, high. It is like a mountaintop. And it cannot fall. It cannot be destroyed. That is part of its beauty. Everything else about us can get ground down by the trials of life. And yet our essence is untouched. It's always pure.

So this is what I feel Jesus is referring to in this analogy: our incorruptible essence.

And Jesus adds, nor can the city be hidden. A city high on the mountain stands out. It is visible from miles around. And so also is this light within us. We may have lost touch with it, and yet, still it shines. In the end, it cannot be hidden. It will come to light – your true nature, waiting, waiting to shine.

So this is what I read into this analogy of Jesus. Perhaps some other idea comes to you. It is poetry. Allow it to speak to you how it will.
